CAN I USE EXISTING GAMES SOFTWARE WITH A ROVR ?

There are a number of VR games on Steam that work well, such as Minecraft VR, MIND: Path to Thalamus (on the HTC Vive), Alice VR and the Solus Project. The Apollo 11 VR experience also allows you to walk on the moon, though there is not much to do! But right now, some of the best AAA games like Half Life 2, the Call of Duty games, Grand Theft Auto V and Fallout 4 can be played in VR using vorpX. Additionally there are many 2D games on Steam (Valve) that can be played using the ROVR using vorpX. Most Steam 2D games have the option of being played using WASD keys (UK keyboard layout), where a “W” key press produces forward motion in the game. The ROVR supplies the “w” key press. The HMD headset provides direction. If you wish to use games from Steam (Valve) then the following may be helpful: You will need to purchase vorpX and look for vorpX supported games. Find a suitable game from vorpX. Download the game from Steam onto your PC. Run the game. Run vorpX. Plug the ROVR into your PC mic socket (or a USB soundcard). Download and run wiz_mic.exe from our website. Test movement on the ROVR and adjust the mic amplification levels on your PC sound card to achieve comfortable walking in VR. Then play the game and have fun.


HOW DOES A ROVR WORK ?

The ROVR VR treadmill listens to the sound made by sliding feet and converts this into forward motion in games. Direction of movement is provided by the headset. Connection of a ROVR with a PC is via a 3.5mm jack plug (we supply) plugged into the ROVR and the other end plugged into the microphone socket (pink) on the PC’s sound card. You can also use a USB sound card. There are instructions with the ROVR on how to adjust microphone levels in Windows to achieve comfortable walking in VR.

WHAT IS A ROVR VR TREADMILL AND WHAT DOES IT DO ?

The Wizdish ROVR is a VR treadmill that allows a person to walk and move freely in VR worlds presented to them via an HMD. The ROVR consists of a platform, a VR Containment Frame and special low friction shoes. Well over 50,000 people have experienced ROVR VR with great feedback, comprising hundreds of VR professionals and thousands of general public VR novices. Many VR professionals have experienced the ROVR and competitive products and without exception they have chosen the ROVR as the best, most intuitive VR locomotion experience.

IS THE ROVR COMPATIBLE WITH HTC VIVE AND OCULUS RIFT CV1 ?

ROVRs are compatible with all VR headsets including HTC Vive, Oculus Rift CV1, Samsung Gear VR and Pixel-View. (For wireless (phone based) headsets you will need our Bluetooth module – please inquire for availability.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ROVR1 AND ROVR2 ?

ROVR1 Weight: frame + platform + ROVR shoes = 14kg (33lbs). Footprint 1m2. VR containment frame made of polymer – strong and flexible, multi-component frame. ROVR1 platform low walled. Access to VR containment frame via button release gate approximately 33cm wide The ROVR1 is our first product and is still in use with many around the world. Good for content development.  ROVR2 for commercial applications ROVR2 Weight: frame + platform + ROVR shoes = 28kg (62lbs). Footprint 1m2. VR containment frame made of stainless steel, four main components. ROVR2 platform high walled (50mm). Clip on and hinged gate closure approximately 420mm wide. The ROVR2 is our second iteration and is designed for easy access and is suitable for office / commercial and the home. ROVR1 and ROVR2 use the same underlying technology. Software developed for one will work with the other - games work equally well on both.

WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR MAINTENANCE OF A ROVR ?
 

ROVR maintenance depends on usage, but typically requires the platform to be cleaned with warm soapy water once a week if about 20 users /day and maybe cleaned once a day if 100+ users per day. Cleaning frequency depends on dust levels – lower dust, less cleaning required. After cleaning reapply ROVR Lube supplied with each kit.
DO YOU NEED A HARNESS ?

ROVR VR treadmills don't need a harness and any clothing may be worn. Military and para-military boots can be used using our ROVR kick-on overshoes. All medical opinion tells us that a harness for able bodied people is not good for balance, hygiene or comfort. However medical applications of the ROVR may find value in providing a harness for people who need this extra support. In these instances use of a harness will likley be a clinically driven decision.

DOES THE ROVR SOLVE SIMULATION SICKNESS?

Short answer is: YES. So long as HMD frame rate, stutter, lag etc are all okay (mostly solved nowadays), the remaining major cause of Simulation Sickness is the result of mismatch between visual and vestibular senses, i.e. people feel uncomfortable if what they see does not match with what they feel. If your eyes tell you the world is moving, but your stomach and inner ear give feedback you are stationary this mismatch may cause discomfort and can lead to nausea. Many people feel this strange sensation for a few moments if sitting in a train in a station when the train next to them moves off. This same “train in a station” situation is brought about by sitting down wearing an HMD and then "walking" in a VR world by using a keyboard or joystick. Visual information from your HMD says you are walking, but this will not be matched by vestibular / proprioceptive senses and ~80% of people will feel uncomfortable. Weight bearing and moving your legs by moving around in a VR world using a ROVR solves the visual, vestibular and proprioceptive mismatch. Thousands of people using ROVR VR have proved this to be true. The ROVR also removes restrictions on content developers who are presently confined by sim-sickness programming protocols (e.g. moving by teleportation) which usually destroys immersion.


ROVR kit includes?
The VR containment frame as a standard and necessary component. Safely exploring and experiencing different situations is an important feature of VR and our VR containment frame provides freedom to move safely in VR open worlds – no need for 5m x 5m room free of obstacles. The sense of realism is greatly enhanced by physically moving in VR worlds using a ROVR and some games when viewed seated will be much more threatening / frightening when using a ROVR and this will need to be gauged by the user.

IF I HAVE A PHYSICAL DISABILITY CAN I STILL USE THE ROVR?

In all instances where a person has a physical disability we recommend involvement of a health care professional to assess the ROVR and the mode of movement and balance required. We have been asked this question by people for whom walking any distance is a challenge and the answer is yes the ROVR requires very low effort and may be ideal for rehabilitation or just gentle, low impact exercise.
